First Drive Toyota Innova Zenix Hybrid: Kijang is no longer the same!

Jakarta

After 45 years of presence in Indonesia, the seventh generation of the Toyota Kijang has finally arrived under the name of Innova Zenix Hybrid.

In addition to supervising the birthing process, detikOto also had the opportunity to experience the Toyota Innova Zenix Hybrid directly. How is the impression?

Hybrid car, not just to make it efficient

The latest Toyota Innova is available in two engine options, namely conventional petrol and a petrol engine coupled to an electric motor, also known as a hybrid.

Both are M20A engines, but the conventional gasoline type has the designation FKS, while the hybrid type has the designation FXS. Both also have the same displacement of 1,987cc and are in line-4 configuration with Dual VVT-i.

We tested the hybrid version of the Toyota Innova Zenix. In this type, the powerful petrol engine produces 152PS and 187Nm of torque, adding more power and torque than an electric motor.

Toyota claims that the electric motor that aids the parallel petrol engine is powered by 113bhp and 205Nm of torque. So that, in total, this hybrid engine can produce 265 HP and 392 Nm of torque. Extraordinary.

The tests we did were classified as dynamic and did not last long. However, from this initial test, you can imagine how much fun the Toyota Innova Zenix Hybrid is.

The first time you step on the accelerator pedal, the flow of power from this hybrid engine is smooth and effortless. Yes, because at first we were immediately greeted with the EV mode, which in fact the car only runs on electric motor and battery.

The feeling is exactly like driving a pure electric car. We were both amazed and incredulous, because where else can we hear a Kijang moving silently and without emissions.

I remember driving the Kijang Capsule with a 2 liter diesel engine where you could really feel the vibration, ‘rough’ sound and black smoke coming out of the exhaust. Now the Kijang is no longer the same.

Going back to the Innova Zenix Hybrid, when the car needs more instantaneous power, all you have to do is put in more petrol and the petrol engine will start. This makes the car accelerate with real power.

We even had time to invite the Innova Zenix Hybrid to gobble up the slope. The result? Naturally, with the help of an electric motor, it is very easy for Innova to overcome its slopes. Even to stop halfway and continue the journey, there seems to be no difficulty.

While Toyota hasn’t proven Toyota’s claim about the efficiency of the hybrid engine in the Innova, in our opinion, the presence of electrification devices in the latest Innova doesn’t just make the car economical.

Plus, the ride feel was fun too. Because the car can stop effortlessly and silently, but can also be driven “in gear” due to its great power.
