One plane takes off and lands at the BER Airport in Schönefeld every day. “The two mega-cities of Berlin and New York belong together,” said the airline. United works together with Lufthansa: The flights can also be booked via the German airline.
It is the first long-distance connection from BER to the USA. There are also direct connections from Schönefeld to Singapore, Doha and, in winter, to Dubai. The Boeing 767 was said goodbye in the morning with water fountains from the airport fire brigade. From May 27th to the end of October, United will also be flying from BER to Washington.

More long-haul routes required for BER
Politics and companies in the region have been calling for more long-haul routes for the new airport for years. Even at the former Tegel Airport, there was only a one-digit number. In most cases, passengers from Berlin and Brandenburg have to change trains at hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich for longer connections.
Before the Corona crisis in 2019, there were only six long-haul destinations at what was then Tegel Airport. The hope that there would be more with the opening of BER was initially not fulfilled. The airport went online in 2020 in the middle of the Corona crisis with numerous travel restrictions. United is now returning to Berlin with its New York connection.
