First demonstrator dies as a result of protests in Myanmar | NOW

A young woman died on Friday after being gunned down in protests in Myanmar earlier this month, her brother has reported to various media outlets. She is known to be the first protester to be killed as a result of the anti-coup protests.

The woman, who had just turned 20 years old, had been on a respirator since February 9. The doctors suspect that she was shot in the head during protests.

Her brother says that he is very sad, but has nothing else to say.

During the protests, the army used tear gas and water cannons and sometimes also fired rubber bullets. Reports also emerged that live ammunition may have been fired. The doctors of the now deceased woman say that she was not hit by a rubber bullet, but by live ammunition.

Much criticism of the coup nationally and internationally

Unrest arose in Myanmar after the coup d’état on February 1. The army then arrested Head of Government Aung San Suu Kyi. Her political party had won the parliamentary elections with odds, while an army-affiliated party was severely defeated. The generals then argued that fraud had taken place. They promise to call new elections.

Many citizens are not satisfied with that. Sometimes tens of thousands of people come to demonstrations. International pressure on the military regime is also growing.

Several Western countries have imposed sanctions on Myanmar. Neighboring India on Thursday joined countries that pressed for the restoration of democracy.
