Tank M1 Abrams American production which is claimed to be a champion has finally arrived in Ukraine. The Ukrainian army said the first delivery of US Abrams tanks to Kyiv gave them more protection and firepower.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine had received its first delivery of Abrams tanks to help fight Russia. Mark Milley, America’s top general, claimed the M1 Abrams tanks were the best in the world and that they would make a difference in the 19-month war.
With its powerful engine, 120 mm main gun and special armor, the Abrams tank is said to be very deadly. Ukrainian soldiers who will operate the Abrams tanks call it a major improvement over the Soviet-era tanks they currently operate.
“Abrams tanks have protection against exploding ammunition. (These Soviet-era tanks) don’t have it. If the ammunition explodes, there is no chance of survival,” said Vitalli, a Ukrainian army tank driver.
A tank commander known as Wel said his team needed the additional firepower and protection offered by the Abrams and other Western tanks, such as the German-made Leopard.
“It would be better to have foreign weapons. I’m sure they are better armored and more effective,” he said.
He also discussed the capabilities of western tanks such as the Leopard. “My friends who were trained to drive Leopard tanks and took part in the attack told me that the Russian T-72 tank was penetrated (by the Leopard tank),” he said.
Zelenskiy did not say how many Abrams tanks had been delivered so far. The Kremlin said the supply of new US military equipment such as Abrams tanks would not change the situation on the battlefield. Milley also admitted there was no “panacea” to end the war.
A 26-year-old officer named Oleksandr said his main worry was facing a large contingent of Russian troops. Although Kyiv’s forces had been reinforced by Western weapons, progress was slow against Russian troops sent to the eastern front.
“It’s all about the size of their troops. The progress happened because of the large number of troops. We know they have more tanks than we do in Ukraine,” said Oleksandr. Oleksandr hopes for more Western aid including ammunition, artillery and fighter planes and tanks.
The M1 Abrams has a powerful gas turbine engine, which can carry the 60 ton tank up to 70 kilometers per hour. The main weapon fires accurately while moving. The heavy armor provides protection against anti-tank weapons. The design also emphasized the crew’s survivability.
This American-made tank has much heavier armor than the Russian tank. During the Gulf War, the US military recorded several instances of enemy fire ricocheting off the tank. The Abrams is too heavy compared to Russian tanks to provide good protection.
Most of this tank’s destructive power comes from depleted uranium bullets. These bullets are very effective at penetrating enemy armor because they become sharper on impact. According to former British Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, DU is the strongest tank ammunition with a much greater impact power than traditional tank ammunition.
But even though the Abrams is tough and powerful, that doesn’t mean this tank can’t be stopped. It is potentially vulnerable to some of the threats that have disabled some Leopard and Challenger tanks in Ukraine, such as anti-tank mines, missiles, artillery and drones. Not all tank areas are protected equally.
