After the match, police said angry fans stormed the pitch after their club, Arema FC, lost 3-2 to historical rivals Persebaya Surabaya, their first defeat in more than two decades. .

Police later claimed they tried to get fans to return to the stands and eventually fired tear gas into the crowd after two police officers were killed. According to the police, this sparked mass panic.

At one exit there was a traffic jam and “shortness of breath and lack of oxygen,” local police chief Nico Afinta said. Many of the victims were then trampled to death.

The Indonesian Football Association has therefore suspended first division matches for a week. He also banned Arema FC from playing home games for the remainder of the season.
