For the first time since the virus outbreak in Italy, there are fewer corona patients in intensive care (IC) in the country than a day earlier. In total, 3,994 patients require intensive care, 74 fewer than Friday.
About a third of these patients are in hospitals in the northern Italian region of Lombardy. However, this is also the first time that the number of occupied IC beds has fallen.
The number of hospital admissions in Italy has also stabilized in the past week and even decreased slightly. It is too early to draw really firm conclusions, but the situation in the southern European country seems to be moving in the right direction.
In addition, fewer people have died in all of Italy than in the previous 24 hours. On Saturday, the death toll rose by 681, Friday and Thursday by 766 and 760 respectively. For less than a week, fewer than 900 deaths have been reported each day.
In total, more than 15,000 people died in Italy from the consequences of the virus. The country still has the highest death toll in the world. Spain has meanwhile registered more infections. The Italian health services have already announced that the death toll may be underestimated.

Death toll in France rises sharply due to adjustment of registration of the deceased
The number of registered deaths in French hospitals rose by 441 to 5,532 on Saturday. Since March 1, more than 2,000 people have died from the effects of the coronavirus in nursing homes. These figures have been included in the statistics since Thursday.
France has been in lockdown since March 17. People are only allowed to leave their home with an authorization form for essential purposes, such as walking the dog, getting a breath of fresh air and running errands. The lockdown will certainly last until April 15, but the French government has already announced that it will most likely be extended.

The coronavirus in short
- The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
- You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
- The corona measures have resulted in an infected person infecting less than one other person on average. Previously, this so-called reproduction number was between two and three.
- The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
- Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
