Los Angeles County Public Health, California, USA confirmed the first death by West Nile virus for the 2023 season in the county. The patient, a resident of the San Fernando Valley area, was hospitalized and died from a neuroinvasive disease associated with West Nile virus.
A total of 19 cases have been documented in Los Angeles County so far this year (excluding Long Beach and Pasadena, as local health departments report cases identified in those cities). Human infections are likely to continue throughout the rest of the summer and fall, with the highest number of cases typically emerging in the month of September.
