First day of opening: One third of pubs did not open, sales at 80 percent

On Thursday, it lit up again over the pubs and pubs, restaurants and bars reopened to the public. But the well-known Prague company Bellevue was not waiting for customers. The door remained closed here.

“The Bellevue restaurant remains closed, its opening is tentatively planned for next spring,” confirms Alena Větrovcová, marketing manager of Zátiší Group, where the company belongs.

And there were quite a few similar places in the Czech Republic. According to the data of the company Dotykačka, through which the sales of a quarter of restaurants pass, 31 percent of companies remained on the market compared to February (which was the last pre-fashion month).

Closure temporary but also complete

“On Wednesday, only 41 percent of the establishments were open in the entire gastronomy. On Thursday, the first possible day of full opening, that number jumped to 69 percent. This means that two thirds of companies are currently reopened, ”says Petr Menclík, CEO of Dotykačka.

While Bellevue believes it will start again next year, other companies have closed completely. This is also confirmed by breweries that supply their drinks to restaurants. “According to the latest information from the market, we know that three percent of customers have so far decided to permanently close their operations,” says Alena Váchová, Communications Manager at Staropramen Breweries.

Revenues at 80 percent of the pre-Jewish level

“On Thursday, the total revenues of gastronomic enterprises reached 80 percent of February, while on Wednesday it was 46 percent. However, it should be noted that November sales are on average 10 percent higher than in February due to seasonality, “points out Petr Menclík.

Thursday’s disintegration was reflected in all gastro segments. Restaurants have improved the most, with 75 percent of businesses now operating according to the number of active coffers (again compared to February), while less than half were still open on Wednesdays. There was also a significant shift in the pub segment, which moved from just 14 percent of open businesses to 46 percent on Thursday.

The breweries change the old beer to new ones

“Over the past week, we have planned everything to start the bottling of draft beer and ensure its distribution. We already received the first orders during Friday. We also promised that we would exchange the used beer for a new one free of charge and we would carry out the mentioned sanitation at our expense, “says Alena Váchová.

Throughout the lockdown, cafes and bistros managed to maintain their operation the best, but they also improved by ending the lockdown. 65 percent of them were open on Wednesday, and 86 percent on Thursday. Cafe sales are just 10 percent below February levels.

The Karlovy Vary region hit the pandemic and its associated restrictions the worst. Only about 55 percent of companies reopened here. The opposite situation is in Prague, where 84% of companies are currently in operation.
