On her first day as chancellor of education, Melissa Avilés-Ramos walked the halls of University Middle School, on the lower east side, where she spoke to teachers and students.

“I am so proud to be the new chancellor of the New York City Public Schools,” said Avilés-Ramos. “As a mother and as a teacher it is very important to me to be the best chancellor that I can be and to work together, work together with the families and with all the teachers to reach a level of success that is even better than ever.”

Among his goals, Avilés-Ramos indicated that he would continue with programs for students with disabilities and multilingual students, as well as strengthening and improving scores in reading and mathematics.

“Our ‘bilingual’ program is designed for students who are new to this country and who want to improve their language not only in Spanish, but also in their new language, which is English. It’s a program designed for new Chinese kids,” explained Laura Peynado Castro, director of Neighborhood University’s middle school.

The Chancellor’s aim is to help students create a path to a better and brighter future.

“And as a mother, I am so proud because I know that the same thing I would want for my daughter is the same thing I would want for all the children here in New York,” the chancellor said.

Chancellor Avilés-Ramos has been in the education system for more than 17 years. A former vice chancellor of family and community engagement for the Department of Education, she holds a bachelor of arts degree from Fordham University and a master’s degree from CUNY. She was born to a Puerto Rican mother in the South Bronx and was the first in her family to graduate from college.

“It is a pride for Latinos to have a position of that magnitude to be a woman in charge, and it has also been a challenge for all of us women to achieve that type of position. Avilés-Ramos has extensive experience as an educator, having begun her career as an English teacher at Truman Middle School in 2007, and then became principal at Schuylerville Middle and High School, where she increased the graduation rate from 23% to 68% in her first. year, and from 68% to 83% in their second year.

For his part, Mayor Adams highlighted the new chancellor’s previous work, saying that her record in student graduation for more than two decades is proof that she is qualified for the job.
