First Covid death in New Zealand in current outbreak | Abroad

The deceased was a woman in her 90s with some underlying health conditions. The new infections were all in Auckland, the epicenter of the outbreak.

The government of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern decided on Tuesday, August 17, that New Zealand went into lockdown due to one corona infection. Only supermarkets, GP practices and hospitals are open, all non-essential businesses have had to close.

New Zealand is aiming for complete elimination of the virus. According to Ardern, this can only be done through an “early and hard approach.” Earlier this year, he also ensured that the virus was eradicated in the country. No corona infections were detected in New Zealand between February this year and mid-August.

The woman who died on Saturday was only the 27th corona death in New Zealand since the outbreak of the pandemic in February 2020.
