It concerns a traveler who returned from South Africa on November 22. The traveler was fully vaccinated and showed mild symptoms, which are gradually improving. All persons who have come into close contact with the traveler have meanwhile tested negative.
The omikron variant has already appeared in about twenty countries after it was first detected in South Africa.
Since Monday, the United States has banned travelers from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland (eSwatini), Mozambique and Malawi. In a short speech on Monday, US President Joe Biden called on all Americans to get vaccinated. That is the best remedy against the spread of the new variant, the president emphasized.
On Thursday, President Biden will announce the US winter plan against COVID-19 with possible new requirements for travelers. The American authorities want to oblige international travelers to the United States to have a corona test taken at least one day before departure, instead of three days before departure.
