First childhood vaccines expected next week: administration could start in January | Coronavirus what you need to know

The very first Pfizer vaccines for children are expected in our country next week. That reports Het Nieuwsblad. According to the Vaccination Task Force, this concerns 186,000 doses. After the advice of the Superior Health Council and a decision by the competent ministers – expected on 17 December – the first invitations would go out at the end of this year. The first injections could then be done in January.

At the end of November there was already a European advice on the vaccination for children:

The childhood vaccines have a different composition and dosage than vaccines for adults. In total, there are 490,000 5- to 11-year-olds who can receive a vaccine after the decision.

With the delivery next week, our country is ahead of the schedule that Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke announced after last Friday’s Consultation Committee. He said at the time that the first doses of Pfizer’s vaccine for under-12s were expected at the end of December.

First deliveries

“The Vaccination Task Force is in constant contact with producer Pfizer/BioNTech about the first deliveries of pediatric doses of the vaccine. The production of these vaccines has started and the first delivery of 336,000 doses to our country is planned for the end of December. This may already happen in the week of December 20. A second delivery of 400,000 doses is expected in January,” he said.

If there is a favorable scientific advice, our country can start vaccinating the age group from 5 to 12 years around the turn of the year, the minister also said at the time.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has already given a positive advice on 25 November to use the Pfizer vaccine for children from 5 years. In our country, we are still waiting for the advice of the Superior Health Council and the Bio-Ethics Committee. They are expected on December 16.
