First case of Nile virus confirmed in Texas – News Now

Authorities of the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the first case of Nile disease which is caused by the West Nile virus. This case was reported by Dallas County health officials.

A Dallas resident is the first case of this Nile disease, this virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, it reports by experts that the majority of people who are exposed to the virus do not get sick, only 20% of people can present symptoms, among the most common highlights:

  • Headaches
  • Fever
  • Muscle pains
  • Joint pain
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

In more severe cases the virus can get to affect the nervous system, only 1% of the population can show a serious state of health. In the event that the nervous system is affected, the symptoms that represent a alert status are:

  • Neck stiffness
  • Disorientation
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Paralysis and even death

The authorities recommend to the community protect against mosquitoes giving some recommendations that can be carried out very easily.

Wear long sleeves and pants.

Apply insect repellent. Use an insect repellent registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), such as those that contain DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone.

Throw away standing water. Throw the water that accumulates in toys, tires, Trash cans, buckets, clogged rain gutters and flower pots will deprive mosquitoes of their ability to breed.

The Health Sector reports that last year 122 cases of the disease caused by the West Nile virus were reported in Texas and 24 deaths. In the last five years, Texas has had 805 cases and 63 deaths caused by the Nile mosquito bite.
