The Swiss authorities announced on Tuesday the first case of a person affected by the new coronavirus on the territory of Switzerland, in a region close to Italy.
This first case “is confirmed,” said a spokeswoman for the federal health services. Further details are to be released later today. The case was discovered in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, which borders Italy, the canton said on its website.
Cases of the disease that appeared in China have already been recorded in neighboring countries, in France, in Germany, in Austria or in Italy. Italy has seen a sudden increase in the number of cases identified in recent days. So far, seven elderly people or those suffering from preexisting illnesses have died there after contracting the virus. Austria meanwhile announced on Tuesday its first two cases of coronavirus, two people infected in the Tyrol region, bordering Italy.
