First Case of Monkeypox Discovered in Cirebon Regency: Health Measures and Precautions

CIREBON DISTRICT — The Cirebon Regency Government, through the Health Service, stated that it had discovered the first case of “Monkeypox” or monkey pox affecting its residents.

As we all know, the Indonesian Government through the Ministry of Health has issued an appeal to increase awareness of the infectious disease Monkeypox or monkey pox to the entire community since the discovery of the first case on October 13 2023 in Jakarta.

“The development of cases of Monkeypox or monkey pox in Indonesia currently totals 44 cases spread across Jakarta, Banten, Riau Islands and West Java,” said Kadinkes Cirebon Regency, Dr. Hj. Grandma Hasanah.

Neneng explained that Monkeypox is a disease caused by the Monkeypox virus. Originally, this disease was a zoonotic disease, meaning it was transmitted from animals to humans.

“This disease can also spread from human to human through close contact with bodily fluids or skin lesions of infected people, indirect contact with contaminated objects, or droplets (and the potential for aerosol transmission over short distances in close contact over a long period of time), and includes sexual contact,” he explained.

He revealed that people infected with monkey pox have symptoms of fever, severe headaches, muscle aches, back pain, weakness, swollen lymph nodes (in the neck, armpits or groin) and rashes or skin lesions.

“The rash usually starts within one to three days of the fever. This rash or lesion on the skin develops from red spots like smallpox, blisters filled with clear fluid, blisters filled with pus, then hardens or scabs and then falls off,” he said.

Apart from that, said Neneng, the rash tends to concentrate on the face, palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The rash can even be found in the mouth, genitals and eyes.

Meanwhile, the discovery of the first Monkeypox case in Cirebon Regency was detected thanks to active hospital and community surveillance activities (Puskesmas).

“For this reason, we appreciate the quick response from our health team, so that we were able to find this case early and quickly respond to mitigation efforts,” said Neneng.

Furthermore, he explained, currently Monkeypox patients are under intensive medical monitoring and have been isolated (self-isolation) to prevent further spread.

“We are currently tracing the origin of the infection and monitoring the patient’s close contact with people closest to him,” he said.

He appealed to the public to remain calm and follow the information and recommendations of the health team from the Cirebon District Health Service.

He also suggested that the community could improve clean and healthy behavior; maintain hand hygiene and cough etiquette; avoid direct contact with animals that are infected and can be vectors of disease, such as mice and primates; Avoid close contact with individuals showing smallpox-like symptoms.

“For those who experience signs and symptoms of Monkeypox or monkey pox, immediately go to the nearest health center for further examination and treatment, and carry out isolation to prevent transmission,” he appealed. (DISCOMINFO)
