First Call of Russian and US Defense Ministers since the Ukraine War, Here’s What’s in it

MOSCOW – US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu made their first phone call since the start of Moscow’s operations in Ukraine in late February.

The news was confirmed by both parties on Friday (13/5/2022).

“Austin has called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine,” said Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby.

According to the press secretary, Austin also “emphasized the importance of maintaining lines of communication” after nearly three months without contact with the Russian defense minister.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense (Kemhan) on Friday confirmed the phone call.

The Russian Ministry of Defense noted that the two discussed international security issues, including but not limited to the situation in Ukraine.
