For the first time, a Belgian has been admitted to the leading Amercia Cinema Editors (ACE) guild. Nico Leunen from Brussels was accepted as a member after several rounds of voting. He calls it an honor to be an ambassador for what he says is “beautiful but invisible profession”.

Leunen is the very first Belgian to be admitted to the ACE. Since 1950, the association has been organizing seminars and round table discussions on topics in the industry, bringing together the best mechanics in the world. Every year, the association presents the Eddy Awards, prizes for the best editing work.

You can only become a member of the guild after nomination, sponsorship and invitation. It is rare for non-US members to be admitted as active members due to the strict requirements. Notable active members include Oscar-winning and nominated mechanics Joe Walker (“Dune”), Michelle Michelle Tesoro (“The Queens Gambit”), Mikkel EG Nielsen (“Sound of Metal”) and Yang Jinmo (“Parasite”).

“This unique recognition motivates me more than ever to be a worthy ambassador of this beautiful but invisible profession,” said Leunen about his admission to the guild.

The 47-year-old Brussels resident is the regular mechanic of Felix van Groeningen, Fien Troch and Koen Mortier and has edited, among other things, “Steve + Sky”, “Another’s happiness”, “Days without love”, “The unhappiness of things”, “The Invader”, “The Broken Circle Breakdown”, “Kid”, “Un Ange” and “Home”. He has been honored several times for his work, including at the Ostend Film Festival and with the Flemish Film Culture Prize in 2012-2013.

He has also worked on international films, such as Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut “Lost River” and James Gray’s “Ad Astra” starring Brad Pitt, and several HBO series. He is currently associated with Koen Mortier’s new feature film “Skunk” and “Le otto Montagne” by Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch.
