First attempt at scam with COVID-19 vaccine and email hacking detected

  • Criminals claim to be CCSS officials and generated code to steal password

  • In 3 months, 609 scams with false links are counted: losses reach $ 1 million

(CRHoy.com) The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) warned the population that a case has already been registered where scammers tried to use COVID-19 vaccination of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) for hacking an email and possibly trying to access bank accounts.

The information was confirmed by Yorkssan Carvajal Aguilar, Head of the Fraud and Scams Section of the OIJ.

“Yesterday there was a scam alert. The person says he is a CCSS official. It is a call where they ask to schedule the appointment for the COVID vaccine and supposedly indicates that a code will be generated to the mail, but in reality that code generates a new password to the mail. This person gave the code and found out that the email was hacked, “said the police chief.

Carvajal explained that, in addition, the offender spoke to the person about a list to withdraw the FCL and “that I was going to help him with that ”.

However, the affected person realized the possible scam and that his mail had been blocked, so he immediately went to the authorities and the scammers did not achieve their mission.

The police chief called for people to be distrustful and not fall into the skillful way of speaking of criminals. He pointed out that the case was reported yesterday, and was coordinated with the OIJ’s Office of Plans and Operations.

Scams already go for $ 1 million

In the first quarter of 2021, scams against citizens already accumulate an economic loss of around $ 1 million dollars. Today the OIJ and the Superintendency of Pensions made an appeal because criminals are using false pages to scam the population.

So far this year 619 complaints were recorded through links and, far from decreasing, a slight increase in cases was reported.

At the moment, the OIJ said that it works to try to stop the groups that work outside and inside the national prisons.

Superintendent Rocío Aguilar insisted that these scams start with a call and a person will never be called to ask for sensitive information.

According to the OIJ, under this form of scam, a person reported losses of $ 84 thousand dollars. Scammers act by trial and error, randomly trying to see which person falls. In the last 5 years more than 57 thousand people have been victims of scam.
