This tournament is the last tournament of the season in which only the top eight players with points earned this season can participate. Players will be divided into two groups of four and compete in a round-robin format, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
This is the second time in two years that Fritz, 27 years old and ranked fifth in the world, will be participating in the tournament. The last time they participated was in 2022, they made it to the top four.
In this tournament, they finished second in the Jiri Nastase group in the preliminary round robin with two wins and one loss, advancing to the semifinals.
In the first set of the semi-final against Zverev, ranked No. 2 in the world, Fritz won points with a 95% probability on his first serve and did not give his opponent a single break point. Get a break and take the lead.
However, in the second set, Fritz allowed Zverev the first break of the match in the fourth game, but was unable to break back and was caught up by one set all.
In the final set, Fritz fought off five break points and continued to hold. Although he was unable to get a break in the return game, he succeeded in getting two mini-breaks in the tie-break at the end, winning the fierce battle in 2 hours and 21 minutes.
This is the first time in 18 years that an American player has advanced to the finals of the tournament, since J. Blake (USA) who won runner-up in 2006.
ATP, the men’s professional tennis association, posted Fritz’s comments on its official website.
“I believe in my play and my level. Lately I’ve had more opportunities to play against top players in big tournaments, so I don’t feel as anxious in these situations as I used to. I’m really confident in my play.”
Fritz, who won, will face No. 1 seed J. Sinner (Italy) in the final. Sinner advanced by defeating sixth seed C. Ruud (Norway) in the semifinals.
