First aircraft land at new Berlin airport | Abroad

Dozens of climate activists demonstrated at the new airport on Saturday, carrying signs saying “flying is so yesterday” and “opening canceled due to the climate crisis.”

BER replaces Tegel and Berlin Tempelhof airports. Tegel is expected to close on November 8, Tempelhof closed in 2008.

The construction of the new airport started in 2006. It should actually open in 2011, but technical problems and other setbacks caused a significant delay. Construction costs also amounted to billions.

Due to the corona crisis, the opening of BER comes at an unfortunate time. Several airlines have reduced the number of flights due to travel restrictions caused by the pandemic.
