England win first Test against Sri Lanka by seven wickets
England surpassed Sri Lanka’s target of 74 by five wickets on the fifth day. England started the last day at 38 for three. Johnny Bairstow (35 *) and Daniel Lawrence (21 *) kept England at bay.
This gave England a 1-0 lead in the two – match series.
Score: Sri Lanka – 135/10 & 359/10, England – 421/10 & 76/3.
Earlier in the first innings, England captain Joe Root, who had bowled out Sri Lanka for 135, scored 421 runs on a double century. Root, who faced 321 balls, scored 228 runs, including a six and 18 fours.
In the second innings, Thirimanne (111), Kushal Perera (62) and Angelo Mathews (71) put on 359 for the first wicket to put England ahead by 74 runs.
Dominic Sibley (2), Zack Crowley (8) and Joe Root (1) were all out for 14 as Sri Lanka defended against England. But the Bairstow-Lawrence duo added 62 for the fourth wicket to give England the lead without further loss.
