Fireworks set off at the Watersportbaan in Ghent, but who …

In Ghent, the police were turned out on Saturday evening after a man had set off fireworks at the Watersportbaan, near the AZ Jan Palfijn hospital. A series of heavy flares were set off around 10 pm. The idea behind the unsolicited fireworks is a mystery.

The officers were quick to catch a suspect. But he could not give any reason for his actions, according to the first statements it would not be a statement of support for the hospital’s care staff.

Police are guessing the reason for the fireworks, a spokesman said Sunday morning. There are suspicions that it was an alternative Halloween celebration, but the birthday of KAA Gent – the club just existed for 120 years on Saturday – may also have something to do with it.

The flares were of a heavy caliber and could be heard in the spacious surroundings. Images on social media show that flares were fired from different locations, so it was presumably the work of several people.

Various reports were received by the Ghent police. The man who provided the nighttime spectacle has been questioned but not arrested. According to the first information, he would not have violated corona measures, but is not allowed to fire flares without permission.
