Fireworks sellers fear a new noose now that the municipality has announced that lighting consumer fireworks around the turn of the year is prohibited. Many sellers still have their stock from last year because there was a fireworks ban because of corona. They are still allowed to sell, but they expect little from it due to the ban.

Amsterdammers have to set off their fireworks somewhere else around New Year’s Eve. It is no longer allowed within the city limits. The funny thing is that the sale of consumer fireworks in Amsterdam is still allowed. “Yeah, that’s a bit crooked,” says Mustafa of a hardware store in West.
He earns about twenty percent of his annual turnover by selling decorative fireworks. And he doesn’t expect much from sales this year. “Maybe some children’s fireworks. Stars and fountains.” Last year, Mustafa was also not allowed to sell because of corona. Because it was a national ban at the time, he received a small compensation, but he does not expect to receive anything this year.

“It’s tradition”
Jeffrey in Noord also provides a small noose this year. In addition to a bicycle shop, he also has a shop that only sells fireworks. Although Jeffrey doesn’t expect much from the sale, he still opens the store. “We are going into the sale with mixed feelings. We are going to sell anyway because it is tradition. We grew up with it.”
Moreover, by opening the doors, he may be able to collect some money from the municipality afterwards. “Last year we managed to get a small national subsidy. By selling now, we can report to the damage counter of the municipality afterwards. You show your figures there, and if you have lost turnover you get a certain amount. will of course not cover what we normally sell in those days.”

Fireworks shows
Amsterdam now promises to come up with fireworks shows itself. One in every part of the city, and a large one on Museumplein as well. Jeffrey has yet to see it all. “I hope the municipality keeps its word and does not give false hope to the people. Two years ago they had no money for a fireworks show, and in conversations with us it was also said that there is no money. Money is a problem and enforcement is a problem. I’m curious how they envision that.”

“I’m afraid it won’t be reversed”
–
The setting off of fireworks is a subject for discussion every year. A lot of Amsterdammers would be in favor of a ban because of the nuisance, accidents and the environment. Both Mustafa and Jeffrey think there are more enthusiasts than opponents, but fear that there is no turning back now. “I think there will be a definitive fireworks ban,” says Jeffrey. “I’m afraid it won’t be reversed.”
