Fireworks Sales in the Netherlands: 105 Million Euros Spent, 5 Million Less Than Last Year

Dec 30, 2023 at 7:32 PM Update: 2 hours ago

The Dutch have bought around 105 million euros worth of fireworks this year, estimates the Interest Association Pyrotechnics Netherlands (BPN). That is 5 million less than last year, when a record amount of 110 million euros worth of fireworks was sold.

Last year’s record sales were considered an outlier. In the two corona years before that, there was a national fireworks ban. When the Dutch were allowed to light fireworks again last year, they were purchased en masse.

Yet the figures show that the Netherlands is still “fireworks crazy”, says Leo Groeneveld, chairman of the trade association for fireworks importers and wholesalers. “The enthusiasm is as great as ever. This is unimaginable.”

Turnover is smaller this year, but more fireworks have been purchased, says Groeneveld. According to him, the decline in turnover is due to the bad weather, which meant that fewer children’s fireworks were sold than normal. Decorative fireworks actually sold more.

Saturday is the last day that fireworks can be sold. Because December 31 falls on a Sunday, fireworks are not sold on New Year’s Day. Many shops are open until late in the evening. The expectation is that the final turnover will be several million higher. However, last year’s record amount will probably not be broken.

During New Year’s Eve, fireworks may only be let off between 6:00 PM and 2:00 AM.
