Fires: Number of firefighters injured in Castro Verde rises to five

The number of firefighters injured in the fire that broke out this Monday afternoon in the municipality of Castro Verde, in the district of Beja, rose to five, a source from Civil Protection told Lusa. The commander of the Castro Verde Volunteer Firefighters, Vítor Silva, said that the fifth wounded is a firefighter of the Alvito corporation, who was transported to the Basic Emergency Service (SUB) of the Castro Verde Health Center.

Vítor Silva also indicated that two firefighters seriously injured in the fire, both from the Cuban corporation, were transported by helicopter, one to Hospital de Santa Maria and the other to Hospital de São José, both in Lisbon. The other two firefighters, who suffered minor injuries, one from the Ferreira do Alentejo corporation and the other from the Castro Verde corporation, were both assisted at the scene.

The commander of the firefighters of Castro Verde said that the fire continued to burn, around 11 pm, with an active front and with “the wind hindering the fight” and mobilized 165 operatives, with the support of 60 vehicles. During the afternoon, three aerial means were also involved in fighting the fire.

National Road 2 was cut off to traffic between Castro Verde and the town of Carregueiro and Main Route 2 between the village of Entradas and Castro Verde, both having already reopened to traffic, the source of the GNR told Lusa.

The alert was given at 17:07, with the “large dimensions” fire in areas of brush and field set in Lagoa da Mó, near Casével, Castro Verde municipality, the Leja District Operations Command of Beja told Lusa .
