In May, Bolsonaro again deployed the military to protect the Amazon forest. He did the same in August last year. Still, 12 percent more forest disappeared in May than in the same month in 2019.
An even higher toll in the number of fires this year would come on top of the corona pandemic, which has already killed 60,000 Brazilians and Bolsonaro has not really put on a good figure, to say the least.
Brazilian specialists also fear that the fires in the Amazon forest will cause even more respiratory problems in people who have been infected with the virus. They will be sick for longer and show more symptoms, quotes the British news agency Reuters infectiologist Guilherme Pivoto.
