Fires / In “red” the risk for the 3 days 9-11 August warns Meteo

Fire-meteorological conditions are expected to worsen due to the significant strengthening of northerly winds – Which are the areas with the most unfavorable conditions

The alarm bell for the three days August 9-11 hits the meteo of the National Observatory of Athens (EAA), as the risk for forest fires it will be in “red”.

Specifically as mentioned the effect of meteorological conditions in ease of ignition of forest fuels it is cumulative and affects the speed of fire spread in case of fires.

Despite the retreat of high temperatures and the prevalence of less dry atmospheric conditions in recent days, the ease of ignition and the speed of spread therefore remains highand very high in the greater part of our country, as can be seen from the analysis of the measurements of the network of automatic weather stations of the Meteo unit.

According to the most recent forecast data available, during the three-day period 9 – 11 August 2023 it is expected in places deterioration of pyrometeorological conditions due to the significant strengthening of the north winds.

Analyzing the geographic zones where we expect the higher wind intensities (winds with an average speed of more than 5 Beaufort) with the highest flammability of forest fuels on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, the regions with the most unfavorable pyrometeorological conditions include Attica, Boeotia, South Phocis, Evia, Eastern Argolis, Eastern and Southern Laconia, Cyclades, Crete, Dodecanese, Samos, Ikaria, Chios, Lesvos, Lemnos, Samothraki, Thassos, Sporades and locally in parts of Rhodope, Evros and Halkidiki.

It is pointed out that in the above geographical zones, special attention should be paid to areas where the north winds they will “align” with topography and forest fuel (eg, when the wind blows perpendicular to the slope of a densely vegetated mountain mass), maximizing the potential for extreme fire behavior, the meteo also points out.
