OAKA is in trouble as insufficient security at construction sites for the maintenance or renovation of facilities results in the theft of materials by gangs becoming a daily phenomenon
The government has opened the cannula and is spending huge sums that will exceed 110 million. euros for the “facelift” of the Olympic facilities in Marousi. From time to time the gold-plated stadiums and OAKA grounds are turned into construction sites for their renovation. The works are necessary, however, there is no necessary security, as a result of which thefts are very frequent, especially of cables, and thus create serious problems with the operation of the stadiums.
The administration of OAKA has dealt with this specific problem several times and still no definitive solution has been given. Two weeks ago there was another major theft of utility cables that knocked out the operation of telephones and more. A proposal was made to the OAKA Board of Directors to hire a security company that has drones and special dogs to better guard all areas on a 24-hour basis. Finally the executives and employees saw that the job was taken over by a security company that guards the premises with… fire engines (as seen in the photo)! No drones, no special dogs, no additional security measures despite the constant cases of robberies.
The Olympic Stadium – for the time being at least – has no problems with fires or isolated fires and any problems created by the insufficient guarding of the facilities. Besides – according to the words of the rulers – there is money for OAKA. For its renovation and maintenance, the prime minister initially promised a fund of 53 million. euros, then the amount rose to 80 million. and about a month ago the Deputy Minister of Sports G. Vroutsis announced that the amount that the government will allocate will reach 110 million. Some of this money could be used to adequately guard the facilities.
They are having a… party
The last theft – until the next one – at the… distressed premises was just four days ago where again cables were stolen which had been bought to repair damages… from previous thefts.
According to testimonies of people who play sports in the areas of the Olympic facilities, “gangs of burglars, whether Greeks, Roma, or Africans who operate mainly in the northern suburbs, have a party with the thefts in the facilities since the existing security is not sufficient. And as long as materials arrive for the renovation or maintenance of the facilities, these materials will be an easy target for the gangs hunting for copper, iron, etc….”.
Robbery of a security guard
However, how dangerous the situation is in the premises of the OAKA and how much the additional security measures are deemed necessary and necessary was seen a long time ago, when in January 2023 (12/1) a robbery took place against a guard and theft of material at the premises of the OAKA . Four unknown persons attacked the 53-year-old security guard of the facilities early in the morning and after beating him, took away his money, personal belongings, his mobile phone and his car. With their own car and that of the security guard, they also stole materials from the OAKA facilities, mainly from the area where archery is held. Despite the searches that followed by the police, the perpetrators were not located.
After all, it’s not just the Olympic facilities that have so many problems of abandonment and rot, where minor and major damages occasionally appear in the closed stadiums and endanger the lives of thousands of people, but here come the looting gangs to make things even better. worse…
