NEW YORK – A firefighter responding to a two-car accident in Manhattan was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when one of the vehicles moved unexpectedly, fell on top of the firefighter and crushed his leg, authorities say.
The vehicle that fell on the FDNY member had been partially resting on another car stopped at a stoplight in Hell’s Kitchen at W 42nd Street and 11th Avenue.
Multiple firefighters were working to stabilize the BMW after its driver moved forward and got into the second car. It is not yet clear what caused the initial crash.
The top vehicle was already tilted 45 degrees when it rolled forward and landed on its side, on top of one of the firefighters.
Once he was removed from the vehicle, the firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of a fractured femur, FDNY sources said.
No injuries were reported for any of the passengers involved.
