Fire, Tunnel | Engine failure gave rise to smoke in tunnel

Fv863 The Kvalsund tunnel in Tromsø was closed on Sunday at 6.50 pm due to smoke development.

Firefighters rushed to the tunnel.

– We have been notified that there is smoke development from a car by the tunnel, says operations manager Roy Tore Meyer to Nordlys.

Emil-Christian Eriksen Larsen was among the first on the spot. He says it is luck that there was no accident.

– I drove into the tunnel from the Ringvassøya side. There was more and more smoke over time. At the very bottom was a car with an emergency turn signal that came from smoke.

Larsen got in touch with the driver, who explained that there was an engine failure, and called the police to notify.

– It was so poor visibility down in the tunnel that you saw nothing but the emergency lights. An accident could have happened here quickly.

The Kvalsund tunnel connects Kvaløya and Ringvassøya. Karlsøy municipality was thus without a mainland connection as long as the tunnel is closed.

At 7.30 pm, the tunnel is open to traffic again.
