A 68-year-old arsonist was arrested in flagrante delicto by the Carabinieri of the Rende Company for forest fire after she had set fire to a forest. The woman was stopped thanks to the intervention of a Carabinieri officer on duty in Luzzi who, off duty, witnessed the scene.
The soldier noticed the woman who, after making sure that no one was watching, set fire to some brushwood in the San Leo di Luzzi area, adjacent to a cane thicket, with a lighter, and then quickly walked away. Once the operations center of the Cosenza provincial command was alerted to request the intervention of the fire brigade, the carabinieri managed to stop the woman. Shortly after, the carabinieri of the Luzzi station arrived on site to support them and proceeded to identify the arsonist and recover the lighter, found in the woman’s fanny pack.
The flames immediately took root in the nearby dry cane thicket. Thanks to the immediate intervention of the Rende Fire Department, the flames were contained and delimited while they had already reached the facing Mediterranean scrub, damaging a green area of about 3,000 square meters and which, if not tamed, could have reached orchards, cultivated land, oak groves and even homes.
The woman, by order of the judicial authorities, was placed under house arrest pending the summary trial.
