Fire Safety in Cabins: Lack of Smoke Detectors and Poor Condition of Extinguishing Equipment

After inspecting more than 400 cabins in Vestfold, the Vestfold Intercommunal Fire Service (VIB) concludes that extinguishing equipment and warning systems are in poor condition. They write that on theirs websites.

– There are a frightening number of people who either lack smoke detectors or have old smoke detectors in their cabins. Smoke detectors are perhaps the most important thing to have in place when it comes to fire safety, says Morten Jensen, sweeper friend at VIB.

– In addition, extinguishing equipment is in poor condition. Those who have extinguishing equipment often have fire extinguishers that are too old and then it is not certain that they will work, he adds.

According to Statistics Norway, there are around 15,000 cabins in Vestfold. If VIB’s figures are representative of everyone, as many as 8,000 cabins may lack working smoke detectors, they write.

– It alone halves the risk of dying in a fire.

Tips for better fire safety

Tips on smoke alarms

Test the smoke detectors every time you come to the cabin Have at least one smoke detector on each floor. The distance between two smoke detectors should not be greater than 12m. You should have at least one smoke detector per 60 square metres. Must be installed at the highest point of the ceiling and at least 50 cm from the wall. Must be audible in all rooms Smoke detectors should be replaced with new ones every 8-10 years Buy optical smoke detectors, preferably several wirelessly connected

Advice on extinguishing equipment

Required to have smoke alarms

According to Morten Jensen, they come across many errors and deviations on chimneys and hearths during inspection rounds.

– A number of the pipes and fireplaces are old and not in much use. Nevertheless, it is important to maintain and correct faults in pipes and fireplaces, if they are in use.

VIB’s sweepers look at chimneys, hearths and guide cabin owners on fire safety in the inspection of heating systems in holiday homes.

– We generally find that the cabin owners take the advice and guidance we provide and they want to correct errors in fire safety, says Jensen.

All buildings where people spend the night must have smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. VIB also recommends testing the smoke detectors every time you come to the cabin, and that you should have at least one smoke detector on each floor.
