The victims were on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of the hospital in Piatra Neamt where the fire raged.
A short circuit in a device is believed to be the cause of the fire, says Nelu Tataru, the Romanian health minister.

Among the injured is a doctor who was still trying to save the patients from the flames. He suffered first and second degree burns on 80 percent of his body.
