The fire was significantly reduced in an inaccessible area at Pangaeo Oros in Kavala which developed mainly as creeping burning dead fuel on the ground. According to information from the Fire Department, despite the difficulty faced by the firefighters in reaching remote areas with small fires, they managed to reduce it significantly.
At the moment there is almost no breathing in the area and 205 firefighters with 21 groups of hikers and 8 vehicles continue to operate, while 4 aircraft and 2 helicopters will periodically operate until the last light. Assistance in the extinguishing project is provided by project machinery of the Region of North Macedonia and Thrace.
Kikilias: “Everything we knew about the climate has changed”

In particular, Mr. Kikilias underlines:
“Yesterday afternoon, a fire broke out – by human hands, as everything indicates – on Mount Pangeo, which is progressing creepily, burning mainly dry branches and leaves. We are talking about steep, impassable ravines and cliffs at an altitude of 1400 meters, where more than 200 forest commanders are operating, while since the morning aerial vehicles have also joined the battle.

We must realize that everything we knew about the climate and natural disasters in our country, but also around the planet, has changed. I emphasize this for the umpteenth time: We must radically change perceptions and practices both as a State and as citizens.”
