Fire on German Flagged Tanker Ship in Farmsum Chemical Park Area

A fire broke out on a tanker ship behind the chemical park in Farmsum on Friday morning.

The fire raged on the rear of the tanker Ursula Valentin , who has been in the harbor since Wednesday evening. The ship sails under the German flag and is a traditional (type N) tanker that usually transports diesel, petrol, petroleum distillates or edible oils.

No one was injured by the fire. However, an NL-Alert was issued to warn of the smoke moving towards Meedhuizen and Tjuchem. Shortly after 10 a.m., the fire brigade got the fire under control and the NL-Alert was withdrawn.

Environment closed

When the fire broke out, the boat was moored at a jetty behind the chemical park. The boat was evacuated and the seaport channel was blocked. Employees of the chemical park also left their workplaces and were received outside the gates.

As a precaution, the fire brigade scaled up to ‘major fire’ and the police cordoned off the area around the chemical park.

Difficult to reach safely

The tanker was towed to another jetty by a port authority tugboat. According to the spokesman for the fire brigade, because the place where the Ursula Valentin was located was difficult to reach safely and to prevent the fire from spreading.
