The ‘roof of Africa’ is on fire. For five days the fire has been spreading on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. At least 28 square kilometers of nature have now fallen prey to the sea of flames.
More than 500 firefighters and volunteers are fighting the blaze, but they lack resources. The Tanzanian authorities are asking for helicopters and planes equipped to fight the fire.
Dry grassland
Yesterday it seemed that the fire brigade would get under the fire, but because of the strong wind the fire has gotten bigger again. The dry grassland and forest on the slopes of the mountain allow the fire to spread quickly.
The fire destroyed a tourist camp in Horombo. There were twelve huts. The fire started Sunday afternoon in a place where tourists stop on their way to the top of the mountain.
Kilimanjaro rises almost 6000 meters above sea level. About 50,000 people climb the mountain every year.
