Fire in the South African parliament not yet out

South Africa’s parliament building in Cape Town is on fire. The fire likely started in an office on the third floor and then spread throughout the building.

Earlier today, the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure reported that the fire service had the fire under control. But since then, the fire has spread to, among other things, the part where the House of Commons is located.

According to the fire service, it could take hours before the fire is extinguished, because of the many carpets and wooden floors in the building.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. As far as is known, no one was injured. The building was closed for the Christmas break.

Dozens of firefighters are working to put out the fire.
