The passenger train is located in the almost 16 kilometer long Terfner tunnel in Austria. The tunnel is located 30 kilometers outside Innsbruck.
The fire was first reported at 8.45pm.
20 people must be evacuated
Fire crews are in place and heading into the tunnel to evacuate the passengers on the train, which is said to have been heading north to Hamburg and then Amsterdam.
According to Tiroler Tageszeitung the fire service has entered the tunnel, and 20 people have already been evacuated.
The newspaper also reports that the fire should be under control, but this has not been confirmed.
Tirol.orf writes that it has information indicating that the fire must have started in a car that was on board the train.
