Fire in Sayyida Zeinab Market: Millions in Losses, No Human Casualties – Investigation Underway

The Civil Defense Forces extinguished the fire that broke out in a approximately 70-year-old commercial market adjacent to the Sayyida Zeinab Mosque, and resulted in material losses amounting to millions of pounds, with minor human injuries due to suffocation as a result of the thick smoke.

The authorities sent fire engines and civil defense to deal with the situation, and ambulances and local leaders also moved to the fire site.

The fire in Sayyida Zeinab Market comes 24 hours after the huge fire that caused the charring of the Ismailia Security Directorate building in eastern Egypt, and caused dozens of injuries, and the Public Prosecution is investigating its causes.

The head of the Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood, Hisham Abu Al-Makarem, spoke about the fire, in statements to Sky News Arabia, saying:

It originated in a market that is more than 70 years old, known as “Al-Maidah,” and is dedicated to clothes and household supplies. The market consists of vendors spread out next to the mosque, and behind it are stalls displaying clothes and various goods, and a few well-known shops. The fire destroyed most of the market due to the flammable nature of the goods, resulting in millions of losses, of course. Civil Defense forces were able to control the fire, and there were no human casualties except minor suffocation due to the smoke, and ambulances did not transport any injured to the hospital. Sayyida Zeinab Mosque did not suffer any damage. The prosecution is currently investigating the causes of the fire, and the forensic laboratory is the one that will determine its causes. The decision to move the market or not is not my decision, but there are other parties that determine that.
