A fire broke out today in the Russian port Kafkaz in the southern Krasnodar region after a Ukrainian attack on a ferry loaded with fuel tanks, local authorities said.
The ferry, which was carrying 30 fuel tanks, as confirmed by the head of the Temryuk region Fyodor Babenkov, suffered significant damage and eventually sank.
Any potential losses are currently being assessed. Ukraine did not immediately comment on the incident.
A local rapid response team reported that a special fire-fighting train had been sent to the spot. More than 100 people participated in extinguishing the fire.
Several Russian media outlets published photos and videos that appeared to show the fire and thick black smoke rising from the port. Reuters could not immediately verify the videos.
The port of Kafkaz is one of Russia’s largest ports on the Black Sea. Vessels used for both exports and fuel supplies to Crimea pass through the port.
