Fire in Rhodes / “We don’t have infrastructure,” says the deputy mayor

People are sleeping in cardboard boxes – Over 2,500 people have been forced to leave their accommodation

Residents of the island, as well as tourists, were forced to leave their accommodation yesterday, as the fire continues to burn unabated in Rhodes, as a result of which they are forced to stay temporarily in gyms and schools that have been opened to accommodate them.

The deputy mayor of the island, speaking in the morning at Open, described the bad conditions in which the temporary residence of these people is carried out and appealed to anyone who can help to help.

“The problems have multiplied. I’m in a gathering place we’ve opened. Unfortunately, the essentials are not enough, there is only water and some rudimentary food”, noted Mr. Athanasios Vyrinis and then described the tragic moments experienced by those who were forced to leave their homes and accommodations, due to the fiery blaze that is burning the island.

“We don’t have mattresses and beds. People sit on steps and on school desks. They open cardboard boxes and sleep there. The crowd is so big and they have opened schools that don’t have the necessary infrastructure,” he stressed.

According to the deputy mayor, more than 2,500 people were forced to leave their homes. “Until 3 in the morning we received flights of people who are now arriving at our place. Therefore, people came who arrived with their things to take their vacation but have nowhere to stay.

“We appeal to our fellow citizens to take these people to their homes to spend the night”, he noted and underlined that there is a great need for mattresses and accommodation to welcome children and people with problems.
