At least 19 people died in a fire in a high-rise residential building in New York – including children. Why the fire broke out in the Bronx borough is still unclear.
According to initial information, at least 19 people were killed in a fire in a New York apartment building. The mayor of the US metropolis, Eric Adams, announced this in the evening. There are also nine children among the victims. According to the local fire department, many more people suffered injuries – often serious smoke inhalation. Some victims are in critical condition.
The cause of the fire is unclear
According to the information, the fire broke out for an as yet unexplained cause in a 19-story skyscraper, the so-called twin apartments, in the Bronx district. However, the investigators are not assuming a crime at this point in time.
As the fire brigade further announced, the fire had ignited in a maisonette apartment that comprised the second and third floors. The emergency services found the door to the apartment open. This apparently enabled the fire to spread quickly and the smoke to rise quickly.
Worst fire in recent history
In total, the fire brigade was on site with around 200 emergency services. Photos from the scene showed firefighters using a ladder to reach the upper floors of the burning building. New York fire chief Daniel Nigro said it was one of the worst fires in the city’s recent history.
