The health risks of the soldiers stationed in the barracks of Persianthe scene in recent days of a vast fire involving several thousand tons of eco-bales stored in the military complex, are at the centre of a heartfelt letter addressed to the Minister of Defence, Guido Crosettofrom the mother of one of the soldiers serving in Persano. The woman, who has already lost a 21-year-old son due to service (volunteer in Bosniadied of leukemia due to depleted uranium) now fears for the fate of his other son stationed in Persano.
“I am very worried – explains the woman in the letter, addressing the minister – for the situation that occurred in the area within the Ronga barracks in Serre di Persano“. After recalling the fire that involved “tons of waste of all kinds“, states that, “while Arpac is carrying out the necessary checks, the soldiers continue to go to the barracks without any protection. I am writing to you because, having already lost a son in Bosnia, due to depleted uranium, I am worried about the extraordinary environmental conditions and therefore about the health of my son who is permanently serving in the aforementioned barracks and of all the soldiers“.
“I ask – the woman’s appeal – that the military be transferred elsewhere until the consequences of exposure to this environmental disaster are clarified. I beg you to intervene to protect the health of my son, having already given one to the Fatherland, by transferring him to Naples, his hometown. I know for sure that you will do something about it and I thank you infinitely. I would not want my other son, as well as his comrades in arms, to get sick. We have already given to the State, now that’s enough.“.
