Update Krefeld State of emergency in the Hafelsstraße commercial area. The warehouse of a glass company caught fire yesterday morning. A family had to be taken to the hospital. Residents were warned with sirens and the Nina app.
A thick, black plume of smoke drifted over Oppum and Linn to Uerdingen yesterday morning. It was triggered by a fire in a warehouse in the Hafelsstraße commercial area. The fire brigade was on site with over 110 emergency services. The population was warned of the possibly harmful smoke by sirens and Nina-Warnapp. Two adults and two children were taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.

The situation on site was critical, as there is a gas station directly opposite the burning building, which the police secured as quickly as possible. Also in the vicinity of the major fire is the department store “Globus” and right next to the affected warehouse is the large kitchen outfitter “Kitchen News”. There is also a shopping area with a veterinary practice not far away. The situation on site was correspondingly tense, which posed challenges for the more than 110 emergency services. As fire brigade spokesman Christoph Manten stated, it could only be extinguished from the outside because the glass company’s warehouse was in danger of collapsing. Part of the roof collapsed while the fire was being put out. A structural engineer must now decide whether the hall can be entered again at all.

Fire department spokesman Manten described the major fire as one of the biggest in recent months, if not years. The fire was not under control until around noon. However, the extinguishing of the embers lasted until the evening hours. A family living in the building had to be taken to the hospital with suspected smoke inhalation. The parents and their children lived in the building. Craftsmen had rescued them before the fire brigade arrived with a mobile scaffolding from the upper floor, as the fire brigade spokesman reported.
Around noon, the positive news: the two adults and two children are doing well given the circumstances.

The citizens of Oppum and Linn were also able to breathe a sigh of relief shortly after 1 p.m. The warning about the smoke caused by the fire in the commercial area was lifted. The air measurements, which were carried out immediately, did not reveal any substances harmful to the human body. However, passers-by reported unpleasant odors and breathing problems.

The entire area of the Oppumer commercial area was cordoned off by the emergency services until the afternoon. Two SWK Mobil bus routes had to be diverted. The forces of the professional fire brigade and the volunteer fire brigade from Krefeld were deployed. In addition, as a precaution, the guards of the professional fire brigade were staffed with volunteer fire brigades for possible further operations.

The helpers also received support from other measuring units from Viersen, Mönchengladbach and Duisburg. The rescue service and the aid organizations of the German Red Cross and the Maltese Aid Service were also on site. The extinguishing water supply at the site was supported from Duisburg, the water rescue service in Krefeld helped with their drone. The police began investigating the cause of the fire yesterday.

Many people from Krefeld saw thick clouds of smoke moving over their residential area. Up to Uerdingen, the smell of burning is said to have been in the air, residents said on social networks. According to the current status of the investigation, it is unclear what caused the fire.

In the evening, the Krefeld fire brigade extinguished the last embers. Components were pulled apart with an excavator to expose embers and smaller fire spots. The Technical Relief Agency was also on site with a total of 26 emergency services to illuminate the site over a large area. The extinguishing measures were completed around 8 p.m.

A fire safety guard will remain on site for the next few hours. The police secure the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire.
