Fire in Indian hospital kills 4 infants and 36 are rescued | World news

NEW DELHI (AP) – A fire swept through a newborn care unit at a central Indian hospital, killing four infants, officials said.

An investigation has been ordered into the fire that occurred Monday night at Kamla Nehru Children’s Hospital in Bhopal, said Shivraj Singh Chauhan, chief minister of the state of Madhya Pradesh.

There were 40 children in total in the unit, 36 of whom were rescued, Medical Education Minister Vishwas Sarang said. He said he arrived at the hospital within 10 minutes of the incident and everything was now under control.

“The untimely death of the world’s children is unbearable pain,” Chauhan said on Twitter, offering condolences to the families affected.

While an investigation is still ongoing, authorities told the Press Trust of India news agency that a short circuit may have caused the blaze.
