“It’s likely to be a long story,” says Beatrice Zandonella, mayor of Brunegg, about the consequences of the fire in the gymnasium. A fire broke out in the ceiling of the building on Sunday night – a smoldering fire, according to the Maiengrün fire department.

On Saturday evening, third parties rented the hall to hold an event there. The spotlights were used to light the stage, says the mayor. It is possible that the spotlights overheated and that is why the fire started, but the exact cause is still being investigated. “Thank God there were still people on site cleaning up,” explains Zandonella. The fire was noticed straight away and the fire brigade was called.

Gym remains closed for the time being

According to the mayor, the alarm reached the Maiengrün fire department shortly before three in the morning. The fire department wrote on its Facebook page about a time-consuming operation in which they were supported by the Chestenberg fire department and the Lenzburg regional fire department.

During the fire-fighting operations, parts of the ceiling were removed, and a lifting platform was used for this purpose. The premises will remain closed for the time being following the fire. Zandonella estimates that the hall is around forty years old. “We will now have the structural integrity and the floor checked, among other things,” she says.

The closure will also have an impact on school operations, as the gym is reserved for kindergarten and primary school during the day during the week. From Monday to Friday, the venue is also occupied by clubs every evening, according to the municipality’s occupancy plan.
