Inmates protested against the conditions of detention in an internment camp on Christmas Island, which belongs to Australia. At least two buildings were set on fire, the human rights organization Refugee Action Coalition (RAC) announced on Wednesday. Officials from the Australian Border Protection Agency (ABF) were on duty to bring the situation under control. There were initially no reports of injuries.
More than 200 people accommodated
According to the information, more than 200 people are housed in the camp on the remote island in the Indian Ocean, who are not Australians and who have been detained for crimes such as robberies or expired visas. According to RAC, the situation at the facility had been worsening for weeks. Among other things, inmates complained that there were no stable internet and cell phone connections. In addition, detainees reported that they were only allowed to leave their homes for activities for two hours a day.
