A fire broke out this morning around 08:00 in an asylum seeker center in Middelburg. Three houses were damaged, the security region reports.
The 280 residents who were in the building at the time of the fire were temporarily relocated to an adjacent sports hall. Some of them were examined by paramedics for smoke inhalation.
About 90 people who used to live on the third and fourth floors cannot go back. A new refuge is being sought for them. “The approximately 140 residents of the lower floors will not be able to return until tomorrow, because it will take at least 24 hours to make these homes available again”, specified the Security Region.

The fire broke out on the top floor of the Azc, which has four floors. According to several residents, the fire was started by men who fought, he writes Zeeland broadcast. “Those men argue every day,” one of them tells the broadcaster. “They were drinking and smoking weed. Then the fire was lit.”
