To take measures to deal with the consequences of the recent catastrophic fire in Attica, the immediate compensation of those affected and the protection of the life and property of the people as well as the natural environment for the rest of the fire fighting season demands the KKE with a Question to the Parliament and specifically to the Ministers of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, Environment & Energy, Interior, Labor & Social Security and National Economy & Finance.
The KKE talks about the “criminal policy of the ND government”, to which it attributes significant responsibility.
The question of the KO of the KKE
In detail, the text signed by the members of the KKE states:
“In the last few days, the people of Attica again experienced the effects of the criminal policy of the ND government, with the fire that started in the area of Varnavas Attica. A fire that took on enormous proportions, came to burn in the residential fabric of the capital and burned a total of more than 100,000 acres.
The results of this fire are tragic. We mourn the loss of a human life in Patima Vrilissi, while the damage to public property is great, more than 100 houses were burned, businesses, agricultural lands, greenhouses, warehouses and cars were either reduced to ashes or were seriously damaged. The effects on the health of the inhabitants, both immediate and long-term, are also very serious, while at the same time the risk of flooding also increases.
The KKE had warned of the increased risk of the occurrence and spread of catastrophic fires shortly before the start of the fire prevention season with a relevant parliamentary question, which it had tabled on 15/4/2023 (prob. no. 4319), requesting that all necessary measures be taken in a timely manner prevention to prevent a possible forest fire and to prevent possible destruction of forest natural wealth and property as well as to protect the life of the people.
The government has serious political responsibilities because it did not take all the necessary measures demanded by the KKE but also by many mass organizations of Attica.
The KKE accuses the government of undermining integrated forest management and continuing the unscientific breakdown of forest fire prevention and suppression.
On the contrary, during that period, instead of strengthening preventive measures, he brought unacceptable Joint Ministerial Decisions (JDs), which sought to shift the protection of public property to individual responsibility. KYA which finally did not apply after the justified general outcry. Above all, however, it paved the way for the assignment of forest management to wood manufacturers and wood merchants. With the law 5106/01-05-2024, which it passed recently, it delivers both the burnt fuel and all the forests for exploitation (production of pellets, electricity from forest wood, wind and photovoltaic parks, etc.) in the framework of the “green transition”, which has already become “black” for the Greek people.
The government, continuing faithful to the policy that considers the protection of life and property of the people as well as the environment as a cost, that considers the prevention of natural disasters as a cost, did not proceed with brave financing and staffing of critical services, such as the fire brigade, the forestry services with result in witnessing another great disaster.
It is counterproductive and undermines integrated forest management and continues the unscientific breakdown of forest fire prevention and suppression.
The “strong winds”, the “great drought”, the “difficult terrain” justifiably cause anger and indignation in the great majority of our people, since these are the well-known “excuses” of all governments throughout time to cover up the criminal policy that literally leads us from one disaster to another.
Next to the infuriating government propaganda, there is also the propaganda of the useful and convenient opposition of SYRIZA and PASOK, which says that “now is not the time to take responsibility”, that “this is not the time to talk about any shortcomings…”, which lends a helping hand to continue the government’s criminal policy. At the same time, it is also the biggest proof that these parties, either as a government in previous years, or as an opposition today, continue to worship the cost-benefit policy of the EU, which leaves our people exposed to new disasters.
Ministers are asked what measures the Government intends to take for:
– 100% compensation for the damages of those whose property has been destroyed.
– The safeguarding of all the rights of workers in businesses, which were either completely destroyed or suffered serious damage.
– The immediate and complete restoration of all infrastructure (water, energy, etc.) and the protection of the health of the population.
– The restoration of the natural wealth that was destroyed.
– The protection of the life and property of the people, but also of the natural and forest wealth, for the rest of the fire fighting season.
– Ensuring the conditions for integrated management and protection of forests.
– The change in land use policy that has led to the conversion of forests into holiday or main residence areas and finally to the expansion of construction even in high forests by turning land and housing into a profitable outlet for the relevant business groups.
