“Every year we try to get better, with the conditions unfortunately becoming more and more difficult,” the Prime Minister reportedly said during the inter-ministerial meeting at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, after being briefed on how the recent fire in Attica developed, reportedly expressed his satisfaction with the great effort made in the field by the Civil Protection forces and pointed out the improved coordination between the co-competent agencies and services, something which is a conquest for the functioning of the state and its structures.

At the same time, he pointed out that “we have full confidence in those who handle the operational activity of aerial means”, while he emphasized the fact that the allocation of aerial means is now done by officials who have knowledge of the subject and based on specific operational criteria.

The assessment of the extent of the damage

According to the same information, during the inter-ministerial meeting, an assessment of the damaged area was made by the competent agents, while as recorded, less than 10% of the burnt areas are forest areas.

Regarding buildings, the first estimate is that less than 100 have been damaged (labeled “green”, “yellow”, or “red”), most of which are not houses.

The issues of restoration of the area were discussed extensively and overall, with a focus on state aid for the affected, the strengthening and support of the municipalities (the relevant measures have already been announced), the state of the infrastructures in which the control has been completed and compensations in plant and animal chapter starting immediately.
Special reference was made to the evacuations that took place and the condition of the Medical Institutions that were evacuated and which will reopen in the next twenty-four hours.

Mr. Stylianidis, Mr. Papathanasis Stampoulidis, Mr. Petralias and Mr. Kontogeorgis also joined the meeting.
